High-performance cars racing on track during HPDE event

HPDE First-Timer Checklist

Prepare for your first High-Performance Driver Education (HPDE) event with this comprehensive checklist. From car prep to event day essentials, you’ll find everything needed below to ensure a safe, seamless, and exciting track day experience.

Car Preparation

Set yourself up for a successful day by ensuring your vehicle is ready to perform:

  • Fluid Levels
    • Check and top off engine oil, brake fluid, and coolant.
    • Replace old fluids for optimal performance under high-stress conditions.
  • Brake Pads
    • Verify brake pad thickness; replace if less than 4mm remains.
    • Consider upgrading to high-performance pads for future events.
    • Inspect brake rotors and calipers for good condition and proper operation.
    • Bleed brakes before your first event and after every track day.
  • Tires
    • Inspect tread depth and sidewall integrity for proper grip.
    • Adjust tire pressures to the manufacturer’s recommendations for your first session. Ask experienced drivers with your platform about “hot pressures” after a session.
  • Battery Security
    • Ensure your battery is tightly fastened to withstand hard cornering.
  • Loose Items
    • Remove all loose objects from the cabin and trunk to avoid hazards.
  • Tech Inspection
    • Schedule a pre-event inspection if required by organizers.
    • If self-tech is permitted, take it seriously for your safety and others'.
  • Fuel Up Before Arriving at the Track
    • Start with a full tank—track driving burns more fuel than usual.
    • Most tracks have fuel pumps and/or gas stations near by
    • If you have the space, consider bringing jugs so you don’t have to go back and forth during the day (after a few track days, you will get a sense of how much you need – likely at least two tanks worth).

Safety Gear

Safety is the top priority at HPDE events. Don’t forget:

  • Helmet / Head Socks
    • Bring a Snell-approved helmet meeting current event standards.
    • Head socks protect the helmet lining and are optional.
    • Many organizers rent helmets if you are not ready to invest yet.
    • Make it fits properly!
  • Clothing
    • Wear long sleeves and pants made of cotton. Avoid synthetics—some tracks require cotton apparel.
  • Driving Gloves (optional)
    • Improve grip and keep your hands comfortable.
  • Shoes
    • Closed-toe, flat-soled shoes are required. Racing shoes are helpful, but not mandatory.

Tools & Spares

Be ready for minor repairs or adjustments by packing:

  • Basic Tool Kit
    • Include wrenches, screwdrivers, sockets, pliers, and platform-specific tools.
  • Tire Pressure Gauge
    • Monitor and adjust tire pressures accurately.
  • Jack & Jack Stands
    • Essential for tire changes or undercarriage checks (borrowing is possible, but bringing your own is best).
  • Torque Wrench
    • Check lug nut tightness for wheel safety.
    • Some people do before every session (after the wheels have properly cooled).
  • Spare Tires/Wheels (recommended)
    • Prepare for unexpected damage or wear.
  • Fluids
    • Carry extra engine oil, brake fluid, and coolant.
  • Duct Tape & Zip Ties
    • Perfect for fast, temporary fixes.
  • Electronic Devices
    • Capture video or data for later review and improvement.

Personal Essentials

Stay comfortable and at your best throughout the event:

  • Hydration
    • Bring plenty of water and use a reusable water bottle.
  • Snacks
    • Pack high-energy snacks like protein bars.
  • Sun Protection
    • Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are must-haves.
  • Change of Clothes
    • A fresh shirt and socks keep you comfortable post-session.
  • Notebook or Journal
    • Record what you learn after each session for rapid progress.
  • Electronics Chargers
    • Keep your devices powered all day.

Event Day Logistics

A smooth day starts with great organization:

  • Event Details
    • Double-check the location, start time, and requirements.
  • Early Arrival
    • Arrive early for check-in, unloading, and the drivers’ meeting.
  • Driver’s License
    • Bring a valid license for registration.
  • Waivers & Documentation
    • Complete and bring all required forms.
  • Event Schedule
    • Have the schedule on-hand for track meetings, instruction, and sessions.

Bonus Tips for the Day

  • Cool Down Periods
    • After each session, drive slowly around the paddock until oil temps drop below 212°F (or for at least 5 minutes), giving your brakes and tires time to cool. Let your car idle a bit after parking so the fans run and coolant continues to circulate.
  • Engage with Others
    • Meet fellow drivers, ask questions, and share experiences—the HPDE community loves to support newcomers.
    • Seek out people with similar platforms.
      • Ask for tips and/or ride-a-longs (them with you or you with them).
  • Focus on Learning
    • Aim for consistency and improvement, not outright speed—especially on your first day. Speed comes with good technique and practice, spend your time and money on that to start.

Drive safely, learn passionately, and most importantly—enjoy every moment on track!
